Helia is a nation along the Mediterranean coast in South Europe. Lying between Italy and France, the region covers an area of approximately 32,000 square kilometers and is known for its Mediterranean climate and diverse culture.
Helia was founded in 1792 as a joint protectorate between the Netherlands and Italy, following the Treaty of Genoa. Geographically, the country consists of a narrow coastal plain backed by hills and mountains. Its strategic coastal position has made Helia the focus of numerous territorial disputes throughout history.
The peoples and cultures of Helia have been shaped by centuries of influence from Italy, France, and the Netherlands. The national language, Helian, is a Romance language with Germanic and Slavic influences that is natively spoken by the majority of the population. Other speakers include local dialects of French and Italian.
Helia's history is marked by periods of social unrest, foreign occupation, and political turmoil. In the early 20th century, a Fascist movement took hold in the country, leading to years of Civil War and widespread violence. Since then, the country has faced independence movements, military coups, and a complex relationship with its Dutch and Italian protectors. Presently, Helia maintains a Constitutional Monarchy with a parliamentary system of government.
In recent years, separatist movements have gained traction, causing tensions between the semi-autonomous province of Helia and its Dutch and Italian protectors. In 2019, a military coup attempted to overthrow the constitutional monarch Queen Elena. The coup was ultimately unsuccessful but revealed increased support for separatist ideologies.
Despite Helia's turbulent history, the country is a popular tourism destination due to its attractive climate, cultural heritage, and diverse Mediterranean landscape. Visitors are drawn to its picturesque coastal towns, rolling vineyards, and historic landmarks. Notable attractions include the ancient ruins of Elis, the Helian Alps, and the vibrant coastal cities of Santa Marina and Tarsus.
